GIORGOS JAVELLAS

Giorgos Javellas was born in Athens, in 1916 and died in 1976. Firstly he studied
literature but soon cinema caught his attention and became his
biggest love. He never went to any film school, but as he always
said, he learned about film by watching each film 15 times. He
wrote most of the scripts he directed and for the film “Antigoni”
the script was based on one of his own translations from Ancient
Greek. His first film “The Claps” was filmed during the German
Occupation under very difficult conditions and people took notice
of his tremendous talent.
During the next 20 years his work accomplished to combine
popularity amongst the public with high his quality film
aesthetics. Many
people believe that his unique cinematographic language influenced
all the directors from the 1950’s and 1960’s.
His films were the most popular and bankable movies in the
history of Greek cinema, and they also enjoyed very good
reviews from
the critics. He was also a member of the Choice Committee
at the Berlin Film Festival and the first chairman of
the Greek
