ORESTIS LASKOS

Orestis Laskos was born in Elefsina in 1908 and died in 1992. One of the pioneers
of Greek cinema, he directed the silent film “Dafnis and Chloe”
in 1931 containing the first naked scene in the history of European
cinema. Multitasked, with a prolific personality, a poet, a theatrical
writer; he abandoned various studies throughout his wandering
as well as a career to become a military officer. After the German
Occupation, in 1945, he directs “Broken hearts”. His serious
filmmaking career begins 8 years later in 1953 with the film
“The Beauty from beyond”.
Up to his last moments, he was hyperactive and creative.
A refined, well rounded person with an exceptional education,
who left us
with a very significant body of work but a very potholed body
of work. Amongst his films someone can find masterpieces but
also completely tedious films. The themes and the titles of
some of films announced in advance the kitsch period
of Greek VHS
films. However his place in Greek cinema history will be for
ever special.
