PANTELIS VOULGARIS

Pantelis Voulgaris was born in Athens, in 1940. He studied cinema at the Stavrakou
Film Academy, as most directors did of this new generation. His
first encounters with film took place when working in various
positions at the studios of Finos Film, next to his mentor Dino
Dimopoulos; he reached the point of becoming an assistant director.
In 1965
his first short film participates at the Thessalonica Film Festival,
a very important year for Greek cinema since a lot of new filmmakers
made their film debuts. His next short film, “Jimmy the Tiger”
(1966) won an award at the Festival. Also his first feature film
“The matchmaking of Anna” receives a lot of positive reviews
and the success of the film established him as a successful filmmaker
and confidently sets off for his victorious career.
Voulgaris even if he belongs to the new generation of directors
who renewed the Greek cinema, his work does not come in rupture
with the old, traditional Greek cinema and filmmakers. His
films do not participate in the factitious segregation
that many new
filmmakers of his generation attempted to create, finally failing.
His films accomplish to combine high cinematographic aesthetics
with themes and subjects accessible to the general public.
